My name is Christine Cortina. I found your website when I did a search for the Far East Café in google.
I am a graduate student at Cal State La working on my MFA thesis in graphic design. I am doing a series of site specific installation proposals on 4 neighborhoods in Los Angels that I frequent. One of the 4 sites is the Far East Café in Little Tokyo. One of my friends who also went there with her family as a child told me the importance of the café to Japanese Americans living in Los Angeles.
My thesis is concentrated on memories of the past- stories that I have been collecting from people that have connections to the 4 sites- like the Far East Café. I have read the 2 articles on your site, "Valley Girls memories of Far East Café" by Jenny, and "The China Meshi" Manifest by Tony. They are very wonderful stories/memories of the café. I also love the photo's that Jenny has included in her article.
The project that I am doing for the Far East Café is a video that could be projected in the square top windows of the café- I attached a photo so you could get a visual image of what I mean. The video incorporates photos',images, and written memories of the café- like a visual history of it's fruitful past. At this stage it is only a proposal, I have not contacted Chop Suey. It would be shown in the gallery at Cal State LA when I have my thesis show (hopefully in the Fall of this year!)
I was wondering if the two of you would be willing to allow me to use your memories in my thesis project. It would be great if If I could also use some photographs that you have from the café. I have already collected some photos, and memories from a good friend.
Please let me know what you think. I would so greatly appreciate if I could use your memories. Attached are 2 JPG's of the story board for the project.
Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.
